Why Men Should Practice Yoga

What’s the first thing that comes into people’s mind when they heard the word yoga? Well, I don’t know either, but I do know the one that they least expect about the term yoga: men, that’s what.

Did that make sense? Well, of course it did. When did men ever been involved in something as feminine as yoga.

I mean, I’ve been walking this earth for as long as I remember, and when we talk about guys, I know that they usually engage in sports that requires you to use active wear such as football players, basketball players, soccer players, tennis players, boxers, wrestlers, actors, lawyers, doctors, gym instructors, scientists, and… well, the list goes on, but one thing for sure, I’ve never heard of men that were cut out for yoga.

I’ve never heard of such a thing until I got interested in health and fitness myself.

There are lots of things men can get when they practice yoga. The benefits are way to many to mention, but whatever those benefits are, they all boil down to one thing: disconnection to “man” self image.

What is the “man” self image and why is it so important?

We’ve all been introduced to gender roles ever since we were kids. Our parents may not have directly told us that “this is your gender role” , and other stiff like that, but they did make it obvious that certain gender are only allowed and expected to do certain things.

Since we’re talking about gender roles, then let’s start with the women.

Women are supposed to wear clothes that are for women such as skirts, dresses, blouses, female jeans and the like. If you ever see a woman wearing men clothes then there is a big chance that society will criticize her because of it.

Women are expected to play sports that are less extreme such as badminton, table tennis, and the like.

There was a time when basketball was a sport exclusive only for men. During that time, even if you were a woman that took some kind of interest in basketball, then you’d be forced to forget about it so that society won’t have anything to say about it.

As for men, they are the ones who are considered to be masculine. They are expected to engage in sports that involves a great deal of effort and energy.

They are expected to be brave and strong. They are expected to ooze a masculine aura. Well, the list is too long to be stated here.

Let’s just say, gender roles are a bit exhausting and frustrating for men.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that you should stop doing what society tells you to do. What I’m simply saying is that perhaps, you need a break.

We all need the time to disconnect. We all need at least an hour in a day or in a week where we forget about all our social responsibilities and obligations. Yoga gives you that opportunity.

Why do men need to disconnect?

Well, I don’t really know how I’m supposed to answer this question, so let me ask you a other question back: are you happy?

Why am asking this?

Well, that’s really the only thing there is to it. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that you can’t handle your gender role. You probably can, but that’s not the point.

It’s not about your gender role. Rather, it’s about you. Sure, you can’t escape your gender roles. You can’t just tell yourself that you’re going to stop doing your gender roles. Well, of course you’re still going to do them. You just need to make sure that you have time for yourself too.

You should give yourself time to unwind. This is something yoga can offer you.

With yoga, you’ll be able to give yourself the time to be whoever you want to be. You can relax yourself from the thought that you have to be like this or like that.

What am I recommending this to men and not to women?

The simple answer is, I don’t have to. Yoga is just too normal for women.

I’m not saying that all women do yoga. Some of them probably don’t, but if ever they need to, it’ll be no problem.

On the contrary, when a guy thinks about doing yoga, he may have second thoughts.

If a girl asks her female friend to go to yoga class with here on the weekend, then there’s no problem.

Men, on the other hand, can’t go “ hey dude, do you want to join me in yoga class this Friday night? “. That would be totally weird.

This article aims to provide equality in both gender. This tells us that no matter your gender you can still choose yoga as your fitness and meditation routine.
